How cups to grams conversion works

A cup measures volume, while a gram measures weight. To convert between them you need the weight of one cup of the specific ingredient. A cup of flour and a cup of honey take up the same space but weigh very different amounts.

This converter uses typical weights for one US cup of each ingredient, measured by spooning it into the cup and leveling the top. Tablespoons and teaspoons are converted through the cup: 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons make one cup.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of flour?

About 120 grams for all-purpose flour that is spooned into the cup and leveled. If you scoop the cup straight from the bag, the flour packs down and you can end up with noticeably more.

Why does a cup of sugar weigh more than a cup of flour?

A cup measures volume, not weight. Sugar crystals pack more tightly than flour, so the same cup holds more mass. That is why every ingredient needs its own conversion.

Can I type fractions like 1 1/2?

Yes. You can enter whole numbers, decimals like 0.75, fractions like 3/4, mixed numbers like 1 1/2 and fraction characters like ¾.

Which cup size does this tool use?

It uses the US customary cup of about 237 milliliters. A tablespoon is 1/16 cup and a teaspoon is 1/48 cup. Metric cups of 250 milliliters hold a little more.

How accurate are these conversions?

They are typical averages for spooned and leveled measurements. Brand, humidity, sifting and how firmly you pack an ingredient all change the weight, so use a kitchen scale when precision matters.
