What is VAT?

Value added tax (VAT) is a tax on most goods and services, used in many countries around the world, including the member states of the European Union and the United Kingdom. Businesses add it to their prices, collect it from customers and pass it on to the tax authority.

Prices for consumers usually include VAT. Business invoices list three numbers: the net amount, the VAT and the gross total. Common rates include 5%, 7%, 10%, 19%, 20%, 21% and 25%, and many countries also have reduced rates for items such as food or books. Rates change over time, so confirm the current rate with your tax authority before you send an invoice or file a return.

VAT and US sales tax

The United States has no VAT. Most states, and many cities and counties, charge sales tax instead. Sales tax is usually added at the register on top of the listed price, and it is generally collected once, on the sale to the final customer.

VAT is charged at every step of the supply chain. Registered businesses can usually reclaim the VAT they paid on their own purchases, so in the end the tax is carried by the consumer. The math for adding a percentage is the same either way, so you can use Add VAT mode with your combined sales tax rate.

VAT formulas

Write the rate as a decimal: 20% is 0.20.

Add VAT
Gross = Net × (1 + rate)
Remove VAT
Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate)
VAT amount
VAT = Gross − Net

A common mistake is to remove VAT by taking the rate off the gross price. If 120 includes 20% VAT, the net price is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100. Taking 20% off 120 gives 96, which is too low, because the 20% was charged on the net price.

How to use the VAT calculator

  1. 1Choose Add VAT if your amount is before tax, or Remove VAT if your amount already includes it.
  2. 2Enter the amount and pick a rate, or type a custom rate.
  3. 3Read the net amount, the VAT and the gross amount, then copy the result or a link to share it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. With 20% VAT, divide by 1.20: 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net, so the VAT is 20.

Why can I not just subtract the VAT rate from the gross price?

VAT is a percentage of the net price, not of the gross price. Taking 20% off a gross price of 120 gives 96, which removes too much. The correct net price is 100.

Can I use this calculator for US sales tax?

Yes. Choose Add VAT and enter your combined state and local sales tax rate. The gross amount is then the price including sales tax.

Why is the VAT amount sometimes a cent off from my invoice?

This calculator rounds once, to the nearest cent. Invoices that round the tax on every line item separately can end up a cent or two different in total.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your numbers only end up in a link if you choose to copy one.
