What the would you rather generator does

The generator shows one random would you rather question at a time, with the two choices as large buttons. Tap the side you pick, talk about why, then press Next question. It holds 322 questions in 8 categories, all written for this site and all family-friendly. A question is not repeated until every question in your categories has been shown, so a long evening or a full class period stays fresh.

Would you rather is a simple talking game. Each question offers two choices, both fun, both a little odd, and every player has to pick one. There are no right answers. The fun is in the reasons people give, which is why the game works as an icebreaker at work, a warm-up in class, a party game and a way to pass a long car ride.

The categories

CategoryQuestionsIn Kids modeExample
Food41YesWould you rather eat pizza for every meal for a week or eat tacos for every meal for a week?
Travel41YesWould you rather travel to the beach or travel to the mountains?
Superpowers40YesWould you rather be able to fly or be able to turn invisible?
School40YesWould you rather have a four-day school week with longer days or have a five-day week with shorter days?
Animals40YesWould you rather have a cat or have a dog?
Silly40YesWould you rather have spaghetti for hair or have pancakes for ears?
Work40NoWould you rather work from home every day or work in an office every day?
Future40NoWould you rather live on the Moon or live under the sea?

Work and Future are not unsafe for children. They are about jobs, commutes and grown-up plans, which younger players find less fun, so Kids mode leaves them out.

Options explained

  • Categories. Pick one or several. Questions from all picked categories are mixed into one deck, and the card shows the category of each question. At least one category stays on.
  • Kids mode. Keeps only the categories marked for children and hides the others.
  • Count votes. Each tap on a side adds a vote instead of just marking your pick. The buttons show the number of votes and a bar with the share. Undo last vote removes the most recent tap. The list under the game keeps the result of every question you voted on.
  • Keyboard. Press 1 or A for the left choice, 2 or B for the right choice and N for the next question.
  • Save 20 as PDF. A numbered list of 20 questions from your categories, starting with ones not shown yet. Making the list does not mark them as shown.
  • Copy link. Shares the categories, Kids mode and Count votes, so others start with the same settings.

Ways to play

  • Around the table. Read the question aloud. Everyone answers in turn and gives one reason. The next player presses Next question.
  • Group vote. Switch on Count votes, pass the phone or tablet around and let each player tap their pick in secret. Reveal the count at the end and let the smaller side defend its choice.
  • Guess the answer. One player answers in secret. The others guess which side they picked and score a point for each right guess.
  • Classroom warm-up. Project the page and have students move to the left or the right side of the room. Ask two students from each side to explain.
  • Meeting icebreaker. Use Work or Superpowers for a two-minute round at the start of a call. Everyone answers in the chat.

A worked example

Four friends on a road trip pick Travel, Food and Silly and switch on Count votes. The first question reads Would you rather go snorkeling or go skiing. The phone goes around the car, and the buttons end up at 3 votes for snorkeling and 1 for skiing, 75% to 25%. The one skier explains why, and someone presses Next question. After 20 questions, the list under the game shows every result, and Copy results puts it in the group chat. None of the 20 questions comes back until all 122 questions in those three categories have been shown.

Limits

The list of shown questions and the votes live only in this tab. A reload starts a new deck with no votes. The questions are in English only. The vote count trusts the players: anyone can tap more than once, so it suits friendly groups, not secret ballots.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are there?

322 questions in 8 categories: food (41), travel (41), superpowers (40), school (40), animals (40), silly (40), work (40), future (40). All of them were written for this site.

Will the same question come up twice?

Not until every question in your categories has been shown once. Then the deck starts over, and the page tells you so. The question you just saw is never drawn again right away. Start over puts every question back in the deck at any time.

Are the questions safe for kids?

All questions are family-friendly: no alcohol, no romance, no violence, no health topics, no politics, no religion, no brands and no real people. Work and Future are about grown-up life, like jobs and commutes, so Kids mode hides them and keeps the 6 categories with 242 questions that suit children.

How does the vote count work?

Switch on Count votes and pass the device around. Each player taps the side they pick, and the buttons show the votes and the share for each side. Undo last vote takes back a wrong tap. The results of every question you voted on are listed under the game, and Copy results puts them on your clipboard. Votes stay in this tab only.

Can I print the questions?

Yes. Save 20 as PDF makes a one or two page list of 20 questions from your categories, starting with ones you have not seen yet. It suits a classroom, a party table or a long car ride without a screen. Paper size is Letter for US and Canadian English browsers and A4 for others.

What does Copy link share?

Only the settings: the categories, Kids mode and Count votes. Anyone who opens the link gets the same categories, but questions in their own random order. Votes and the questions you have seen are not in the link.
