What the team name generator does
The generator puts together 12 team names at a time from word lists written for this site. Pick a theme for the setting, such as an office team, a class, a sports club, a pub quiz or a fantasy league. If you like, add a word of your own, such as the company, the school, the street or the class, and every name will include it. Turn on alliteration for names like Clever Coders or Brave Bison, and pick short or long names. Star the names you like to keep them, then copy one name or the whole list.
The themes
Each theme has its own adjectives, nouns and pun names. A shared list of 58 animals adds to every theme, because animal names work for almost any team.
| Theme | Adjectives | Nouns | Pun names, for example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fun and general | 53 | 35 | Pun Intended, Snack Attack |
| Work and office | 37 | 36 | Ctrl Alt Defeat, The Deadline Chasers |
| School and class | 38 | 34 | Smarty Plants, Know-It-Owls |
| Sports | 38 | 35 | Net Gains, Goal Getters |
| Trivia night | 35 | 28 | Quiz Pickles, Know-It-Owls |
| Fantasy league | 30 | 28 | Waiver Wire Whisperers, The Bye Week Snoozers |
The lists leave out trademarks, the nicknames of major league teams and anything rude or violent, so the names suit an office, a classroom or a family game night.
Options explained
- Theme. Chooses the word lists. Work names lean on office life, school names on classes and books, sports names on speed and strength, trivia names on facts and guessing, and fantasy league names on drafts, benches and waivers.
- Word to include. Up to 30 characters. Every name then contains your word, for example Acme Problem Solvers or The Brave Bison of Room 12. A word typed in lowercase gets a capital first letter; other spellings stay as you typed them.
- Alliteration. The adjective and the noun start with the same letter. With your own word, they start with its first letter, so Acme gives names like Agile Acme or Acme Astronauts. Rare letters give fewer names, and the page tells you.
- Length. Short gives two or three words. Long adds a word, such as The in front, a second adjective, a group word like Crew or Society, or of and your word at the end.
- Favorites. The star keeps a name in a list below the results. The list is saved in this browser, so it is still there next time.
How to pick a good team name
- Say it out loud. A name that is easy to cheer or to read out in a quiz round sticks better than a clever one people stumble over.
- Check who will hear it. A name that is funny inside the team may not work on a scoreboard at a school event or in a company newsletter.
- Keep it short for shirts and screens. Two or three words fit on a jersey, a slide or a league table without being cut off.
- Let the team vote. Star five favorites, copy them into the team chat and let everyone pick one.
- Search before you commit. The generator does not check if a name is already in use, so look it up before you print anything.
A worked example
A marketing team needs a name for the company quiz night. Theme is Trivia night, the word is the team's floor, Level 4, alliteration stays off and Length is Short. The list shows names such as Level 4 Sleuths, Witty Level 4 and Level 4 Society. Nobody loves them, so the team switches to Long and gets names like The Curious Footnotes of Level 4. Three names get a star, Copy favorites puts them in the team chat, and the vote picks one. The link from Copy link brings the next team to the same theme and settings, without the words Level 4.
Limits
The names are in English and made from fixed lists, so some combinations will sound odd; press Generate again for a new set. Your word is used as typed after small clean-up: symbols other than &, apostrophes, periods and hyphens are removed. Favorites stay in this browser only, up to 100 names, and do not move to your other devices.

Frequently asked questions
Is the word I type sent anywhere?
No. The names are put together in your browser, and your word stays on your device. It is not part of the link that Copy link makes, so a company or class name never ends up in a shared URL.
Where do the names come from?
From word lists written for this site: 409 adjectives, nouns, animals and group words, plus 120 pun names, sorted into 6 themes. Each click combines them at random, so the same list rarely comes up twice.
Can I use a generated name for my team or league?
Yes, the names are free to use. The generator does not check whether a name is already taken or registered, though. Before you print shirts, register a league or use a name for a business, search for it first.
Why do some names not alliterate?
With alliteration on, the adjective and the noun start with the same letter, and with your own word they start with its first letter. When no list has adjectives and nouns for that letter, as with X, the page says so and shows names without alliteration. For rare letters it may show fewer than 12 names.
How do I save names I like?
Tap the star next to a name. Favorites are kept in this browser on this device, so they are still there when you come back, and you can copy them all at once. Clearing your browser data or using a private window removes them.
Why are pun names missing when I type a word?
Pun names are written whole, like Ctrl Alt Defeat, so there is no place for your word in them. With a word typed in, every name includes it. Clear the field to get puns again.
