How to unscramble letters
- 1Type the letters on your rack or in your puzzle, in any order. Upper or lower case does not matter.
- 2Add a question mark or a space for each blank tile, up to three.
- 3Press Unscramble. The words appear grouped by length, longest first, and update as you change the letters or the filters.
Each letter you type can be used once per word. If you have two E tiles, type E twice. A word that needs a letter you do not have can still show up when a blank fills the gap; that letter is underlined.
Filters for board spots and puzzles
The filters help when a word has to fit a spot on the board or a clue in a puzzle:
| Filter | What it keeps | Example with "listen" |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Words of exactly that many letters | 6 letters: enlist, inlets, listen, silent, tinsel |
| Starts with | Words that begin with these letters | "si": silent, silt, sine, site, sin, sit |
| Ends with | Words that end with these letters | "el": tinsel |
| Contains | Words with these letters next to each other | "ns": tinsel, inset, liens, lens, tens, tins, ins |
The letters in a filter do not have to be on your rack: a word that starts with a letter already on the board is found when you also type that letter in your rack. To search the whole list without a rack, for example every word that ends in "ght", use the word finder.
Which words are in the list
All five word tools on this site share one list: 3of6game from the 12dicts project by Alan Beale, release 6.0.2. It holds words found in at least three of six advanced learner's dictionaries, with their plural and verb forms, and it leaves out hyphenated words, phrases, capitalized words, abbreviations and contractions. The 12dicts readme recommends this list for word games. Because its source dictionaries cover both British and American English, many words appear in both spellings, like color and colour.
We kept words of 2 to 15 letters and removed slurs and the strongest swear words, which leaves 64,236 words. That makes the list smaller than the large dictionaries some games use, so a rare word you know may be missing, and your game may not accept every word shown here. When it matters, check the dictionary your game names in its rules.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use a blank tile?
Type a question mark or a space where the blank goes, for example "rtae?" for the letters R, T, A, E and one blank. You can use up to three blanks. In the results, a letter that a blank has to stand for is underlined, so you see at once which tile plays which letter.
Why is a word I know missing?
The unscrambler uses one public domain list of about 64,000 common English words from the 12dicts project. It leaves out names, abbreviations, hyphenated words and many rare words that only appear in large dictionaries. Board and app games with their own official dictionary can accept words that are not on this list, and the other way round.
Can I find only words that start or end with certain letters?
Yes. Fill in Starts with, Ends with or Contains under your letters. Contains looks for the letters next to each other in that order, so "ing" finds "sing" and "rings" but not "nigh". The Length menu shows words of one length only.
How many letters can I enter?
Up to 20 letters and blanks. The word list has words from 2 to 15 letters, so with more tiles than that you get every word of up to 15 letters that fits.
Are my letters sent anywhere?
No. The word list is downloaded once from our site, and every search runs in your browser. The letters you type are not uploaded or stored.
