A clean signature image in a minute

Contracts, forms, letters and email footers often need your signature as a picture. Signing paper, photographing it and cutting away the background takes a while and rarely looks clean. This free online signature generator makes the image directly: draw with a finger, a stylus or the mouse, or type your name and pick a script style. You get a PNG with a transparent background, cropped to the ink, and for drawn signatures also an SVG.

  • Draw: the pad smooths your strokes with curves through the points it captures. Quick strokes come out a little thinner, a bit like ink. A stylus that reports pressure, such as a pen on a tablet, draws thicker when you press harder. Undo removes the last stroke, Clear starts over, and the pen width slider changes all strokes at once.
  • Type: type your name and tap a style. The preview updates as you type.
  • Ink: black, a document blue or any custom color. The color changes the whole signature, also strokes you already drew.

On a phone, the pad captures your finger without scrolling the page, so you can sign in one go. Turning the phone sideways gives you a wider pad.

PNG or SVG, and which size

FileBest forNotes
PNG 1xEmail footers, chatThe size you see on the pad. Smallest file.
PNG 2xWord, Google Docs, PDFsTwice the pixels in each direction, sharp on most screens and in print.
PNG 3xPrint, large documentsThree times the pixels. Use it when the signature will be printed large.
SVGDesign apps, web pagesDrawn signatures only. Vector paths that scale to any size without blur.

Every PNG has a transparent background and is cropped close to the ink with a small margin, so it sits on a colored email footer or a form line without a white box. Inside the SVG, each stroke is a curve with round ends in the color you picked, the same shapes the PNG shows.

About the typed styles

This tool does not download any fonts. The typed styles use script and handwriting fonts that are already installed on your device: the tool looks for common ones by name, such as Snell Roundhand, Bradley Hand, Segoe Script or Ink Free, and offers up to five it finds. Every device also gets an italic style, plus the browser's own cursive font when fewer than two script fonts turn up. That is why your phone may offer other styles than your laptop, and why typed signatures export as PNG only: an SVG with text would need the same font on every device that opens it.

A typed name is fine for many everyday forms, but a drawn signature looks more personal and is closer to your handwritten one on paper.

A picture of your signature is a simple electronic signature. In the US, the ESIGN Act (15 U.S.C. chapter 96) says a signature or contract in the transactions it covers may not be denied legal effect, validity or enforceability solely because it is in electronic form. It defines an electronic signature as an electronic sound, symbol or process attached to or logically associated with a record and adopted by a person with the intent to sign. The law also lists exceptions, among them wills and family law matters such as adoption and divorce.

An image is not a certificate-based digital signature. It does not prove who placed it and does not show whether the document changed afterwards. Our guide Electronic vs digital signatures explains the difference and the rules in the US, the EU and the UK. This is general information, not legal advice; when it matters, ask the person or office that wants the signature what they accept.

Where to use your signature

  • PDF documents: Sign PDF lets you draw or type the same way and place the signature, the date and initials on any page, without uploading the file.
  • Word and Google Docs: insert the PNG as a picture and size it to the signature line. The transparent background lets the line show through.
  • Email: the email signature generator builds a footer with your name, links and an image.

Keep your signature safe

A signature file is easy to copy. Send it only to people you trust, and prefer signing a document yourself over handing out the image. This tool keeps nothing: when you close the page, the drawing is gone. Save the file to a private folder if you want to use it again.

How to make a signature image

  1. 1Choose Draw and sign on the pad, or choose Type, enter your name and tap a style.
  2. 2Pick the ink color and, for drawings, the pen width. Use Undo to remove a stroke that went wrong.
  3. 3Choose the PNG size: 2x suits most documents, 3x suits print.
  4. 4Download the PNG, download the SVG of a drawn signature, or copy the image and paste it where you need it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my signature uploaded anywhere?

No. The drawing, the typed name and the exported files are all made by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is saved when you close the page.

Is a signature image legally binding?

A picture of your signature is a simple electronic signature. In the US, the ESIGN Act says a signature may not be denied legal effect solely because it is electronic, but it lists exceptions such as wills and family law matters. The image itself does not prove who signed or whether the document changed later. This is general information, not legal advice. When it matters, ask the person who wants the signature what they accept.

Why does the PNG have a transparent background?

So the signature sits on any page or email without a white box around it. Only the ink is colored; every other pixel is fully transparent. The file is also cropped to the ink, so there is no empty space to remove later.

What do 2x and 3x mean?

They set how many pixels the PNG gets for every pixel you see on the pad. 1x is the size on screen. 2x and 3x give a sharper image for printed documents and high-resolution screens. The file stays small either way, because the background is transparent.

Can I download the typed signature as SVG?

No, only as PNG. Typed styles use the script fonts installed on your device, and an SVG with text would look different on a device without that font. The drawn signature is saved as real vector paths, so its SVG looks the same everywhere and scales to any size.

Why are the typed styles different on my phone?

Freebiefy does not load web fonts for this tool. The styles come from the script and handwriting fonts already on your device, so a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone can show different choices. Every device gets at least two styles, one of them an italic.

How do I put the signature into a PDF?

Use Sign PDF: it lets you draw or type the same way and places the signature on any page of your PDF, also on your device. For Word, Google Docs or an email signature, insert the PNG you downloaded here as a picture.
