Writing posts that fit everywhere
If you post the same message on several networks, write for the strictest one first. A post that fits X’s 280 weighted characters and Bluesky’s 300 also fits Threads, Mastodon and every caption field. Put the hook in the first 125 characters, because that is all Instagram shows before "more", and LinkedIn is only a little more generous.
- Links: on X and Mastodon a link always counts as 23 characters, so long tracking links cost nothing extra there.
- Emoji: they count double on X. Two or three are fine; a row of them eats into your limit.
- Hashtags: Instagram allows 30, but a handful of specific ones usually works better than a block of generic tags.
How to use the post character counter
- 1Type or paste your post into the box. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- 2Check each platform’s bar: green fits, orange is close, red is over the limit, and the thin mark shows where the feed preview ends.
- 3Shorten where needed, then copy the text and post it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does X count my post differently?
X weights characters: letters from most European alphabets count as 1, but emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23 characters however long it really is. This counter follows the same rules, so a post that fits here fits on X.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
Up to 2,200 characters and 30 hashtags. In the feed, Instagram shows only the first line or two, roughly 125 characters, before "more". Put the hook and any call to action in those first characters.
What is the character limit on LinkedIn?
A LinkedIn post can have 3,000 characters. The feed shows about the first 210 characters, often fewer on phones, before "see more", so the opening lines carry the post.
Do emojis count as one character?
It depends. On X an emoji counts as 2. Most other platforms count what you see as one character, even emoji made of several parts, like a family or a flag. This tool counts that way for them.
Are these limits always up to date?
They are the published limits as of October 2026. Platforms change them now and then, and paid plans such as X Premium allow longer posts. If a post is right at the edge, check it in the app before publishing.
