All social media image sizes at a glance
Every size below comes from the platform’s own help center or ads guide, last checked in October 2026. Sizes are width × height in pixels. "Minimum" means the smallest size the platform accepts, not the one it recommends, and "Shape only" means the platform names an aspect ratio but no pixel size.

How to read these sizes
Platforms describe images in different ways, so each size has a label:
- Recommended: the size the platform suggests for the sharpest result. Use it when you design from scratch.
- Minimum: the smallest image the platform accepts. TikTok’s ads guide, for example, only lists minimums for in-feed video ads. Go larger in the same shape if you can.
- Maximum: the largest size the platform takes for that placement.
- Shown at: the size the image is displayed at, not an upload size. YouTube says profile pictures render at 98 × 98 pixels.
- Shape only: the platform gives an aspect ratio but no pixel size, like YouTube Shorts, which can be square or vertical.
When we could not find an official number for a placement, such as an Instagram profile picture or a regular TikTok video, it is not on this page. Many size charts online repeat numbers that no platform publishes; we would rather leave a gap than guess.
Aspect ratios explained
The aspect ratio is the shape of an image, written as width to height. 1:1 is a square, 4:5 and 2:3 are portrait, 9:16 is a full phone screen and 16:9 is a widescreen video. To get the height for a given width, divide the width by the ratio:
At 1080 pixels wide, 4:5 gives 1080 ÷ 0.8 = 1350 pixels and 1.91:1 gives 1080 ÷ 1.91 = 565.4, which Instagram lists as 566. Sizes with the same shape are interchangeable: a 1080 × 1350 image and a 1440 × 1800 image are both 4:5, and the larger one simply has more detail.
| Shape | Ratio | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Square | 1:1 | Profile photos, square posts and ads, square video |
| Portrait | 4:5, 3:4, 2:3 | Instagram and Facebook feed posts and ads, Pins |
| Vertical | 9:16 | Stories, Reels, Shorts, TikTok, Shorts thumbnails |
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | Link images, landscape image ads |
| Widescreen | 16:9 | YouTube videos, thumbnails and channel banners |
| Banner | 3:1 to 5.9:1 | X headers, LinkedIn and Facebook covers |
Safe zones and cropping
The right size is only half the job. Parts of many images end up under buttons, profile pictures or the edge of a small screen:
- Stories and Reels ads: Meta asks you to keep about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side free of text, logos and other key elements, so the profile icon and call to action do not cover them.
- YouTube banner: the same banner is shown on computers, phones and TVs and is cropped differently on each. At the minimum size of 2048 × 1152, only the center 1235 × 338 pixels are safe for text and logos.
- X header: about 60 pixels at the top and bottom can be cut off depending on the monitor and browser.
- Facebook Page cover: your profile picture covers part of the left side, overlapping the cover by about 40 pixels on phones, and the photo may be cropped to fit different screens.
- Pinterest: Pins taller than 2:3 might get cut off in the feed.
- YouTube vertical videos: if a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an automatic 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages.
Tips for exporting images
- Design at the recommended size, not the minimum. Platforms scale large images down well, but small images scaled up look soft. Instagram, for example, enlarges photos narrower than 320 pixels and shrinks anything wider than 1080 pixels.
- Mind the file type. Facebook says Page profile pictures and covers with a logo or text often look better as PNG. Pinterest converts uploads to standard 8-bit RGB JPEGs and suggests uploading PNG files in sRGB to avoid quality loss.
- Stay under the file size limit. Limits range from 50 KB for a TikTok ad profile image to several gigabytes for video. The Image Compressor shrinks a file without changing its pixel size.
- Crop first, then resize. If your photo has a different shape than the placement, crop it to the right ratio with the Image Cropper, or let the Image Resizer crop to fill. The Resize button in the list opens the resizer with the size already filled in.
How to use the social media size guide
- 1Pick a platform and a type, choose organic posts or ads, or search for a word like banner or a number like 1080.
- 2Tap a size to see its shape, notes, file limits and the official source.
- 3Copy the size for your design app, or press Resize an image to make your picture fit right away.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an Instagram post?
Instagram stores feed photos at up to 1080 pixels wide and keeps shapes from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 3:4 (portrait) without cropping. That makes 1080 × 1440 the tallest portrait post, 1080 × 1350 a 4:5 post, 1080 × 1080 a square and 1080 × 566 the widest landscape post. Photos outside that range are cropped to fit.
What is the best size for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 shape, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Use JPG or PNG; the file can be up to 50 MB when you upload from a computer and 2 MB from a phone. Shorts thumbnails use 9:16, at 2160 × 3840 pixels.
What size are Stories and Reels?
They are vertical 9:16. For Story and Reels ads on Instagram and Facebook, Meta recommends 1440 × 2560 pixels and asks you to keep about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side free of text and logos, because buttons and the profile icon sit there.
What size is a LinkedIn banner?
For your personal profile, LinkedIn recommends a cover image of 1584 × 396 pixels, a JPG or PNG under 8 MB. A Company Page cover image is 1512 × 256 pixels, and a Page logo 400 × 400 pixels.
What are the X (Twitter) profile and header sizes?
X recommends 400 × 400 pixels for profile photos and 1500 × 500 pixels for header images. Profile photos can be JPG, GIF or PNG up to 2 MB. Depending on the screen, about 60 pixels at the top and bottom of the header can be cropped, so keep text away from those edges.
Why is a size I expected missing?
Every size on this page comes from the platform’s own help center or ads guide, and each one links to it. When we could not find an official number for a placement, we left it out rather than repeat a figure from a blog. We last checked all sources in October 2026. Platforms change their layouts now and then, so check the source link before a big campaign.
