Metric and imperial weight units
Metric weights are based on the kilogram: a gram is a thousandth of it and a metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg. The pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg since 1959, and all other imperial and US weights follow from it.
- 1 ounce is 1/16 of a pound, or about 28.35 g.
- 1 stone is 14 pounds, or about 6.35 kg. It is still common for body weight in the UK and Ireland.
- 1 US ton (short ton) is 2,000 pounds, or about 907 kg.
- 1 UK ton (long ton) is 2,240 pounds, or about 1,016 kg.
Strictly speaking these are units of mass, and a scale shows mass. In everyday language both are called weight, and the numbers are the same.

Where the conversions come up
Body weight is the big one. British scales read in stone, American ones in pounds, the rest of the world in kilograms, and a doctor's form may ask for yet another. Then there is luggage: a 23 kg allowance is 50.7 lb, and the airline will not round in your favor. Recipes from American sites give meat and butter in ounces and pounds, and parcel rates jump at thresholds set in whichever unit the courier prefers.
Shortcuts: kilograms to pounds is double it and add ten percent, pounds to kilograms is a bit less than half. Ounces to grams is roughly times 28. For stone, remember 14 pounds per stone and 6.35 kg per stone.
How to use it
- 1Set the left side to the unit you know, say kilograms, and the right side to the one you want, say pounds.
- 2Enter the weight. Typing on the right converts back the other way, and the swap button exchanges the two units.
- 3Check the list under the result for the same weight in grams, ounces, stone and tons at once. Tap a unit to convert into it, or copy the number or a link.
