PNG or JPG?

PNG compresses without any loss, which is great for logos, icons and screenshots of text, but makes photos huge. JPG, or JPEG, is built for photos: it leaves out details the eye barely notices and gets files five to ten times smaller. A full screen screenshot of a photo or a web page is often 3 MB as PNG and 400 KB as JPG.

Choosing the quality

85 is a sensible default for photos and screenshots: the result looks the same and is small. Go up to 92 or more for images with text, so letters stay crisp. Go down to 70 when the smallest possible file matters more than detail, for example for thumbnails.

Need the opposite, a lossless copy of a photo for editing? The JPG to PNG converter does that.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert PNG to JPG?

Photos and screenshots saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same image as JPG. A JPG is quicker to email, upload and load on a website, and it is accepted by forms that do not take PNG.

What happens to a transparent background?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a color. White is the default; pick any other color with the background option, for example to match the page the image will sit on.

Will the image lose quality?

JPG compression drops details you hardly see. At a quality of 85 to 92 photos look the same as the PNG. Images with sharp text, thin lines or flat colors, like logos and diagrams, can show faint artifacts, so keep those as PNG or use a high quality.

Can I convert several PNG files at once?

Yes, this is a batch converter. Drop as many PNG files as you like. They are converted one after another, and Download all saves them in one ZIP file.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your browser converts the images on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.
