Add Page Numbers

Number the pages of a PDF in the corner you choose, as 1, Page 1 or Page 1 of 12, skip a cover page and check every page in the preview before you save.

Add page numbers

Your PDF is edited by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded.

What this tool does

It writes a page number onto each page of your PDF, in the footer or the header, and saves the result as a new file. You choose the corner, the wording, the size and how far the number sits from the edge. The preview shows any page with its number exactly where it will be in the saved file, so you can flip through before you download.

  • Formats: a plain number, "Page 1", "Page 1 of 12", "1 / 12" or "- 1 -".
  • Start on page: leave a title page or table of contents without a number.
  • First number: continue a count from another document, for example starting at 25 for a second part.
  • Double-sided: keeps left and right numbers on the outer edge when you print on both sides.

Common page numbering setups

DocumentSettings
Report or thesis with a title pageBottom center, "1", start on page 2 with first number 1
Printed booklet, both sidesBottom right, "Page 1", double-sided on
Contract or offerBottom right, "Page 1 of 12", so a missing page stands out
Second part of a longer documentAny corner, first number set to where part one ended plus one
Slides exported as PDFBottom right, "1 / 12", small size, close to the edge

About the font

Numbers are set in Helvetica. The tool refers to the font by name instead of packing a font file into your PDF, so the saved file is only a few kilobytes larger than the original.

How to number PDF pages

  1. 1Drop your PDF on the box or choose it from your device.
  2. 2Click a corner in the small page diagram, pick the format, and set the first page and number if the cover should stay blank.
  3. 3Flip through the preview with the arrows, then save. Your numbered copy downloads with "-numbered" added to the file name.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Your browser opens the PDF, adds the numbers and saves a new copy on your device. The file never leaves your computer or phone.

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Yes. Set "Start on page" to 2. The second page then gets the first number. Set "First number" to 2 as well if the cover should still count.

What does "Double-sided" do?

For documents printed on both sides, numbers on the left or right switch sides on even pages, so they always sit on the outer edge of the paper. Odd pages keep the side you picked.

Do rotated or landscape pages get the number in the right place?

Yes. The tool reads how each page is turned and places the number where you see the bottom or top of the page, upright and readable.

Will links, bookmarks and form fields still work?

Yes. The numbers are drawn onto the existing pages of your PDF, so everything else in the file stays as it was.
