Record a video message in seconds

A short video says more than a long email: a greeting, a quick update for your team, a self tape for an audition, a video answer for a job application or a test of how you look and sound before an important call. This online webcam recorder uses the camera and microphone you already have and saves the video on your device.

  • Preview first: turn on the camera, check the light and framing, then start recording. To see the real resolution and frame rate of your camera, run the webcam test first.
  • Pause and resume: take a break without starting over. The pause is cut out of the video.
  • Several takes: every recording stays in the list below, so you can compare takes and download the best one.

Tips for a good webcam video

Sit facing a window or a lamp, not with the light behind you. Put the camera at eye level, a stack of books under the laptop helps, and look into the lens rather than at your own picture. A headset or a small clip-on microphone sounds much clearer than the microphone built into a laptop, especially in a room with echo.

How to record from your webcam

  1. 1Press Turn on camera and allow access to the camera and microphone when your browser asks.
  2. 2Pick the camera, microphone and quality, check the preview, and press Start recording.
  3. 3Press Stop when you are done, watch the take, and download it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The camera picture is recorded by your browser and stays on your device until you download it. Nothing is sent to a server, and the recording is gone when you close the tab unless you saved it.

Why is my preview mirrored but the video is not?

The preview is mirrored like a bathroom mirror, because that feels natural when you look at yourself. The recording is saved the right way round, the way other people see you, so text on a shirt or a sign stays readable. You can turn the mirror off.

Which file format do I get?

It depends on your browser. Safari and newer Chrome versions record MP4, other browsers record WebM. WebM plays in all modern browsers, VLC and most video editors. For an MP4 from a WebM file, use any video converter.

Can I choose another camera or microphone?

Yes. After you allow access, pick any connected camera and microphone from the lists, for example an external webcam or a headset. You can also record video without sound.

Is there a time limit or watermark?

No watermark and no limit set by us. Long recordings use memory on your device, about 20 to 40 MB per minute at 720p, so for recordings longer than half an hour a desktop computer works best.
