A tally counter in your browser

A tally counter, also called a click counter or a clicker, adds one to a number every time you press it. This online version works the same way: tap the big number on a phone, click it with a mouse or press the Space bar. It counts people at a door, laps in a pool, rows in a knitting pattern, birds on a walk or items on a shelf, without a notebook and without losing count when you get distracted.

Every press is saved in your browser right away. Close the tab, lock your phone or reload the page, and the count is still there. Nothing is sent anywhere.

    Several counters, steps and targets

Add a counter for each thing you count, give it a name, and switch between them in the list. The list also shows the sum of all counters, handy when you count visitors at several entrances. Each counter has two settings:

    • Step: how much one press adds or takes off. A step of 2 counts pairs, a step of 10 counts boxes of ten.
    • Target: the number you want to reach, like 200 guests or 40 rows. A bar shows how far you are and how many are left, and the counter tells you when you reach it.

A tally counter does not go below zero. If a step would take the count under zero, it stops at zero.

How to use the tally counter

    1. 1Tap or click the big number, or press Space or the Up arrow, to count up. Use the minus button or the Down arrow to correct a miscount.
    2. 2Give the counter a name and, if you like, a step and a target. Press Add counter to count more than one thing.
    3. 3Download the counts as a CSV file for a spreadsheet, or copy them as text. Reset sets the counter to zero, and Undo brings it back.

Tips for counting on a phone

    • Full screen: press Full screen where your browser supports it, so the button fills the screen and nothing else gets in the way.
    • Count people at an event: one counter for people coming in and one for people leaving. The difference is how many are inside.
    • Time and count together: the stopwatch takes lap times while you count laps here, and the click speed test shows how fast you can click.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I use this online tally counter?

Tap or click the big number, or press Space or the Up arrow, to add one. The minus button or the Down arrow takes one off. The count is saved in this browser after every press, so it is still there when you come back.

Can I count several things at once?

Yes. Press Add counter to make up to 20 named counters, for example one per door at an event or one per bird species. Pick a counter from the list to count with it. Each counter keeps its own step and target.

    What does the step do?

The step is how much one press adds or takes off. With a step of 2, every tap adds 2, which helps when you count pairs or count in groups. It can be any whole number from 1 to 1,000.

I pressed Reset by mistake. Can I get my count back?

Yes. After a reset or a deleted counter, an Undo button appears for a few seconds. Press it to bring back the counts exactly as they were.

    Where are my counts stored?

Only in this browser, in its local storage. Nothing is sent to a server. A private window or clearing your browser data removes them, so download the CSV file if you need to keep the numbers.
