Meme Generator

Turn your own photo into a meme. Type the top and bottom text in the classic outlined style or write a modern caption above the picture, then download it or copy it.

Make a meme

Your image is turned into a meme by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How the meme generator works

A meme is a picture with a short, punchy text on it. This meme generator puts that text on your own image right in your browser: it opens the picture, draws the caption with a clean outline and saves a new copy. The original file stays as it was, and nothing is uploaded.

There are no ready-made meme templates here on purpose. Famous meme pictures are photos and drawings that belong to someone, so the tool starts from an image you bring: a photo from your phone, a screenshot of your own app, a drawing you made or a picture a friend let you use.

Classic or modern caption

You can switch between two looks at any time, and your text stays.

  • Classic top and bottom text: white capital letters with a thick black outline, one line of text at the top of the image and one at the bottom. The outline keeps the words readable on any background, light or dark. You can turn the capitals off and switch any box to black letters with a white outline.
  • Modern caption: a white bar above the picture with black text in normal case. The bar grows with your caption, so a long text gets more lines instead of tiny letters, and the picture below is never covered.

In both styles you can add extra text boxes for labels, speech or a punchline in the middle of the picture. Every box can be dragged with a mouse or a finger, and with the preview focused the arrow keys nudge the selected box.

Text that always fits

Each text box has a width and a largest size. When you type, the tool wraps the words onto new lines and picks the biggest font size at which every line fits inside the box, so a two word caption comes out large and a long sentence shrinks just enough. You can also press Enter in a text field to start a new line yourself. The Largest text size slider sets the ceiling for all classic boxes, measured as a share of the image width, so the meme looks the same on a small screenshot and a large camera photo.

The font, and what happens without Impact

The classic look uses a bold, narrow typeface such as Impact. This tool does not download any font for it. Instead it checks which fonts your device has: if Impact is installed, the classic text uses it; if not, the tool takes the first bold condensed font it finds from a short list, such as Haettenschweiler, Arial Narrow or Roboto Condensed, and falls back to your system's bold sans serif if none of them is there. The line under the preview tells you which font was used, so you know what the saved file will look like.

The modern caption uses Geist, the open source typeface this site already loads, so it looks the same on every device.

Use images you have the rights to

Before you share a meme, think about where the picture came from. According to the U.S. Copyright Office, a work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form, and its examples of creative works include photographs and drawings. Many of the pictures you find online are works like these.

The Copyright Office also describes fair use, which allows some unlicensed use of protected works. Courts weigh four factors: the purpose and character of the use, including whether it is commercial; the nature of the work; how much of it is used; and the effect on the market for the original. Fair use claims are judged case by case, and the office states there is no formula that guarantees a certain amount is safe. The simplest way to avoid trouble is to use your own photos or pictures you have permission to use. For questions about a specific case, ask a lawyer; this tool does not give legal advice.

Download, copy and share

Download saves the meme at the full size of your image. JPG makes smaller files, which suits chats and social posts; PNG keeps every pixel exactly and keeps a transparent background if your image has one. Copy image puts the meme on your clipboard, ready to paste into a chat or a document; the button only shows when your browser allows websites to copy images. The saved meme carries no EXIF data, so the camera details and GPS location of the original photo are not copied.

For more control over fonts, colors, shadows and rotation, use add text to image. To cut your picture to a square or a 4:5 post first, use the image cropper, and to sign your work, add a watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a meme from my own photo?

Drop your image on the box or choose it from your device, type the top and bottom text, and drag the text where you want it. The text size adjusts by itself so every line fits. Press Download to save the meme as a JPG or PNG file, or Copy image to paste it straight into a chat.

Does this meme generator have meme templates?

No. You start from your own image: a photo you took, a screenshot of your own work or a picture you have permission to use. The tool does not come with famous meme pictures, because those images belong to the people who made them.

Which font does the classic meme style use?

The classic style uses Impact when it is installed on your device. If it is not, the tool picks the first bold, narrow font it finds, such as Arial Narrow or Roboto Condensed, and tells you below the preview which font it used. No font is downloaded for it.

What is the difference between the classic and the modern style?

Classic puts white capital letters with a black outline on top of the picture, at the top and bottom. Modern adds a white bar above the picture with a black caption in normal case. Both styles can have extra text boxes anywhere on the image.

Can I add more text boxes?

Yes. Press Add a text box as often as you like. Each box has its own text and color, sizes its text to fit, and can be dragged anywhere on the picture with a mouse or a finger. With the preview focused, the arrow keys move the selected box.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your browser opens the image, draws the text and saves the meme on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the saved file carries no camera data or location from the original photo.

Can I post memes made from other people's pictures?

Photos and drawings are usually protected by copyright, and the U.S. Copyright Office explains that fair use is decided case by case, with no fixed amount you may always use. The safest choice is an image you made yourself or have permission to use. This tool does not give legal advice.
