A maze maker for kids, classrooms and puzzle pages

This generator draws a maze with one way through, from a small 10 × 10 grid for young children to a 60 × 60 grid that takes a while even for adults. You pick the size, the style of the passages, the wall thickness and the paper, and the maze appears on the page. Download PDF saves it ready to print, with the solution as a second page when Show solution is on. Download PNG saves a sharp image of the maze alone, for a worksheet, a slide or a party invitation.

Every maze comes from a seed, the short code in the Seed box. The same size, style and seed always give the same maze, so you can print it again later, make the matching solution page on another day, or share a link that opens the same puzzle. New maze draws a new seed.

Long passages and branching

Both styles produce a perfect maze: every cell can be reached, there are no loops, and there is exactly one path between any two cells. They differ in how the passages are carved, and you can see the difference at a glance.

StyleHow it is madeWhat it feels like
Long passagesA walk that always moves on to an unvisited neighbor and only turns back at a dead end (recursive backtracker)Long winding corridors, few but long dead ends, a solution that often crosses most of the maze
BranchingGrowth from one cell: a random cell on the edge of the carved area is joined to it, again and again (randomized Prim)Many short dead ends, a bushy texture, a solution that is usually more direct

For younger solvers, Branching at 10 × 10 or 15 × 15 is forgiving, because wrong turns end quickly. For a puzzle page or a long car ride, Long passages at 30 × 30 or more makes every wrong turn cost real time. The solution is found by a breadth first search from the entrance to the exit, which always finds the shortest path, and in a perfect maze the shortest path is the only one.

Sizes, shape and paper

The presets are square: 10, 20, 30 or 40 cells on each side. Fill the page keeps the width of the preset and adds rows or removes them until the maze has the same proportions as the printable area of the chosen paper and orientation, so a 20 cell preset becomes about 20 × 25 on a portrait Letter page and about 30 × 20 in landscape. Own size takes any width and height from 3 to 60, for a long thin maze on a bookmark or a wide one across a landscape page.

The entrance and the exit sit on opposite sides. Tall and square mazes start at the top and end at the bottom, wide mazes start on the left and end on the right, and the exact positions along the side change with the seed. On the PDF the maze fills the page below the title, so a 10 × 10 maze gets large cells for crayons and a 40 × 40 maze gets small ones for a fine pen. Thin walls keep a large maze open and readable; thick walls make a small maze look bold.

PDF, PNG and the solution

The PDF draws every wall as a vector line, so it prints sharp on any printer and the file is small. With Show solution on, a second page repeats the maze with the solution path in green, drawn from the entrance to the exit through the centers of the cells. The PNG holds the maze alone with a white margin, at 2,000 pixels across, with or without the solution depending on the button. The title you type appears above the maze on the PDF; the link from Copy link holds the settings and the seed, but not the title.

Mazes made here work well with the other printable puzzles on the site: the word search generator and the sudoku game for older kids, the bingo card generator for a group. For a party, print a few mazes of different sizes so everyone gets one they can finish.

How to make a maze

  1. 1Pick a size, or Own size with your own width and height, and choose Square or Fill the page.
  2. 2Choose the style, the wall thickness, the paper and the orientation. Press New maze until you like the layout.
  3. 3Turn on Show solution if the PDF should include the solution page, then download the PDF or the PNG. Copy link keeps the seed.

Frequently asked questions

Is this maze generator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no signup and puts no watermark on the maze. The maze, the PNG and the PDF are made in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Does every maze have a solution?

Yes, exactly one path from the entrance to the exit that does not double back. Both generators build a perfect maze, which means every cell can be reached and there are no loops. The solution page shows that path in green.

What is the difference between Long passages and Branching?

The way the maze is carved. Long passages (a recursive backtracker) keeps walking until it hits a dead end, so corridors are long and winding and the solution is often long too. Branching (randomized Prim) grows outward from one cell in all directions, which gives many short dead ends and a bushier look. Both give a perfect maze.

Can I make the same maze again?

Yes. The same size, style and seed always give the same maze. Keep the seed, or press Copy link; the link holds the settings and the seed, so it opens the same maze on any computer.

How big can a maze be?

Presets go from 10 × 10 to 40 × 40 cells, and Own size takes any width and height from 3 to 60. A 60 × 60 maze on Letter paper has cells about 3 mm wide, which is hard to solve with a pen; 30 × 30 is a comfortable upper limit for most printers and pens.

Where are the entrance and the exit?

On opposite sides. Tall and square mazes open at the top and finish at the bottom, wide mazes start on the left and finish on the right. The positions along the side are random and change with the seed.

Which paper size does the PDF use?

US Letter or A4, in portrait or landscape. It starts on Letter when your browser language is US or Canadian English and on A4 otherwise. The maze fills the page below the title, and the solution is a second page.
