Compress Image to 50 KB

Plenty of registration and application portals want a photo under 50 KB. Drop yours here and the tool finds the highest quality that still fits the limit.

Compress images to 50 KB

The file ends up just below the target. 1 KB is counted as 1,000 bytes, so it also passes forms that count 1,024.

JPG is accepted by every upload form. WebP gets more detail into the same size, but some forms refuse it. Transparent areas turn white in JPG.

Your images are compressed by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded.

When you need an image under 50 KB

  • Passport-style and ID photos for online applications
  • Profile pictures on job portals and school systems
  • Logos for email signatures and small web graphics

For a head-and-shoulders photo, 50 KB is comfortable. A square picture of about 600 by 600 pixels fits with very good quality, which is more than most forms display. Larger photos are scaled down only as far as needed.

If the form also asks for exact pixel dimensions, such as 600 by 600 or a 35 by 45 mm ratio, resize or crop the photo first and compress it afterwards. Doing it in that order keeps the most detail.

How much picture fits in 50 KB

A JPEG needs a certain number of bits for every pixel to look clean. 50 KB is 50,000 bytes here, so the bigger the image, the fewer bits each pixel gets. For a 4:3 photo, 50 KB keeps excellent quality up to about 840 × 630 pixels and good quality up to about 1,030 × 770.

Image sizeBits per pixelExpected quality

Quality bands follow the classic guide for JPEG by Gregory Wallace (1991). Modern encoders and WebP do a little better, and simple pictures need fewer bits than detailed ones. The tool measures the real file size, so the result always lands under 50 KB.

Getting an image under 50 KB

Drop one or more images above. The target is already set to 50 KB. For each image the tool tries the highest JPG quality first, then searches for the best quality that still fits, and only scales the picture down when even a low quality is too large. Change the target or switch to WebP and every image is redone.

Need a different limit? The Compress Image to Target Size tool takes any number. To shrink by quality instead of a fixed size, use the image compressor, and for exact pixel dimensions the image resizer.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 50 KB photo be accepted as a passport photo?

The file size is only one rule. Photo requirements usually also cover pixel size, background, lighting and how much of the frame your face fills. Check the full list of the office you apply to; this tool takes care of the file size part.

Should I pick JPG or WebP for 50 KB?

JPG, unless the form says WebP is fine. Application portals almost always accept JPG, while WebP is still refused by some older systems even though it would look slightly better at the same size.

Are my images uploaded to compress them to 50 KB?

No. Your browser decodes each image, tries different quality settings and sizes, and writes the result on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.
