Social Security COLA 2027: 3.6% and What Else Changes

Social Security benefits and SSI payments rise 3.6 percent for 2027, the SSA announced on October 14, 2026. Along with the cost-of-living adjustment come new figures for the taxable maximum, the earnings test, disability thresholds and SSI. Here is when the raise arrives, how it was calculated and what else changes, from the Social Security Administration.

When the 3.6 percent arrives

  • Social Security: from the December 2026 benefits, paid in January 2027, for nearly 72 million beneficiaries.
  • SSI: from the January 2027 payment, which is made on December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a holiday; about 7.3 million recipients.
  • Your notice: in the my Social Security Message Center from late November, or by mail in December. It shows your new amount and any deductions, such as the Medicare premium, whose 2027 figure is published by Medicare.

Payment days themselves follow the schedule in Social Security payment dates.

How the COLA is calculated

The law ties the COLA to the CPI-W, the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers. The SSA compares the average for July, August and September of this year with the same average for the last year a COLA took effect: (328.746 minus 317.265) divided by 317.265 is 3.6 percent, rounded to the nearest tenth.
