Board limits on the free plans

Team whiteboards usually limit how many boards you can edit at once. The limits on the official pages:

WhiteboardFree limit
Miro3 editable boards; unlimited boards, but only the 3 most recent stay editable
Mural3 editable murals at a time
Conceptboard3 active boards, 100 objects per board
Collaboard3 whiteboards, 5 participants per board
Ziteboard3 owned boards, public boards only
FigJam (Figma Starter)Co-edit up to 3 team files with 3 pages each; unlimited drafts
WhimsicalUnlimited boards, but 50 board objects a month

Archive finished boards or export them, so the free slots stay open for the next session.

Who can join and edit

Editors and guests are counted differently. Miro and Mural list unlimited members on their free plans, while Mural's free plan has no guests and gives visitors view-only rights. Conceptboard says guest users can open a board without an account. Ziteboard lists unlimited realtime collaborators, and Figma lets outside guests join a FigJam file free for 24 hours without logging in.

Apple's Freeform app allows up to 100 collaborators on one board, but everyone needs an Apple device.

Whiteboards for teaching

OpenBoard is an open source whiteboard app made for classrooms and interactive boards, for Windows, macOS and Debian. Ziteboard calls its free plan a pick for personal use and students.

For live drawing with a class or friends, Drawpile lets several people draw, paint and animate on one canvas, and WBO runs a free public whiteboard you can also host yourself. Our random name picker and team generator help split a class into groups.

Running a good whiteboard session

  • Set a time box: run each round with the online timer so ideas keep coming.
  • Agree on colors: one sticky note color per topic or person. The color palette generator gives a matching set.
  • Plan across time zones: the meeting planner finds a slot that works for everyone.

Excalidraw is in our free design software list, and mind map tools are in free mind mapping tools. We opened each whiteboard's official page on the date in the table and wrote down only what it says. An empty cell means the page does not say it.
