How Many Working Hours Are in a Year? The 2026 Count

The quick answer is 2,080, but that is a payroll convention, not a count. 2026 has 261 weekdays, eleven federal holidays that all land on weekdays, and then whatever vacation you take. Here is the count from the calendar, the tables for different weeks and days off, and when to use which number.

The 2026 numbers

After holidays and 10 vacation days2401,920
After holidays and 15 vacation days2351,880
After holidays and 20 vacation days2301,840

Those are the figures for a Monday-to-Friday job with the US federal holidays off. Employers that observe fewer holidays, or more, move the second row by eight hours per day; the business days calculator counts the exact working days between any two dates with the holidays you choose.

Where 2,080 comes from

Paid hours in a full-time year
52 weeks × 40 hours = 2,080 paid hours

2,080 is the number of hours a full-time employee is paid for in a year, not the number worked. It counts every week of the year at 40 hours, including the weeks with a paid holiday in them and the weeks of paid vacation, which is exactly right for converting a salary into an hourly rate: a salary covers the paid hours. The salary converter uses it as the default divisor for that reason. Two things make it an approximation even for pay. A year is 52 weeks and one day, two in a leap year, so 2026 actually has 261 weekdays, 2,088 hours, and many payroll systems pay a salary in equal instalments regardless. And it says nothing about how many of those hours you are at work.

The 2026 calendar, counted

2026 starts on a Thursday and is not a leap year, so it has 365 days: 52 full weeks plus one extra day, a Thursday. That gives 261 weekdays and 104 weekend days. The Office of Personnel Management lists these federal holidays for 2026. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees observe it on the preceding Friday; on a Sunday, the following Monday. Independence Day is the case this year.

DateWeekdayHoliday
January 1ThursdayNew Year's Day
January 19MondayBirthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
February 16MondayWashington's Birthday
May 25MondayMemorial Day
June 19FridayJuneteenth National Independence Day
July 3FridayIndependence Day (observed; July 4 is a Saturday)
September 7MondayLabor Day
October 12MondayColumbus Day
November 11WednesdayVeterans Day
November 26ThursdayThanksgiving Day
December 25FridayChristmas Day

All 11 fall on weekdays, so each one removes a working day: 261 − 11 = 250 working days, 2,000 hours. These are the holidays for federal employees; other employers set their own list, so count the days your employer actually closes. Inauguration Day is not in 2026; it comes round every fourth year for federal employees in the Washington, DC area.

After vacation and sick days

Vacation is where the count becomes personal. The table takes the 250 working days after federal holidays and removes the vacation days in the first column; the last column also removes five sick days.

Vacation daysWorking daysHours at 8 a dayHours with 5 sick days too
02502,0001,960
102401,9201,880
152351,8801,840
202301,8401,800
252251,8001,760

A typical US full-time year with 15 days of vacation and a few sick days lands near 1,840 hours actually worked against 2,080 paid, about 12 percent less. That gap is the difference between what a salary pays for and what it buys.

Other working weeks

Not every full-time job is 40 hours. The table repeats the count for 35 and 37.5-hour weeks, at 7 and 7.5 hours a day.

37.57.51,9501,957.51,8751,762.5
4082,0802,0882,0001,880

Per month, the 2026 figures average 21.8 weekdays and 20.8 working days after holidays; at 40 hours a week that is 174 weekday hours or 166.7 working hours a month. The hours calculator adds up a real week or month from clock-in and clock-out times when the schedule is not a neat five days.

Other years

The weekday count only ever takes two values, 260 or 262 in a leap year and 261 otherwise, depending on which weekday the year starts on. Holidays vary by year as they move between weekdays and weekends, so the table stops at weekdays.

Which number to use

  • Salary to hourly rate, or hourly to salary: 2,080, because salary pays for paid hours. $52,000 a year is $25 an hour either way.
  • Capacity planning, project estimates, staffing: the hours after holidays and expected vacation, around 1,880 for a 40-hour job with 15 days off, because that is what a person can actually deliver.
  • Freelance and contract rates: fewer still, since only part of a working day is billable. The hourly rate calculator starts from the income you need and divides by billable hours, not by 2,080.
  • Overtime and time cards: the actual hours in each workweek; the yearly total does not matter for overtime, which is counted week by week.

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are in 2026?

2026 has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day. All eleven US federal holidays fall on weekdays in 2026 (Independence Day is observed on Friday, July 3), so a worker who gets those days off has 250 working days, or 2,000 hours, before any vacation. With 15 days of vacation that is 235 days and 1,880 hours.

Why do payroll and salary calculators use 2,080 hours?

2,080 is 52 weeks times 40 hours. It is the number of paid hours in a full-time year, counting paid holidays and paid vacation as hours, and it is the standard divisor for turning a salary into an hourly rate. It is not the number of hours anyone actually works: a year has 52 weeks and one or two extra days, so 2026 has 261 weekdays and 2,088 weekday hours, and holidays and vacation come off that.

How many working days are in a month?

On average 250 ÷ 12, about 20.8 working days a month in 2026 after federal holidays, or 21.75 weekdays a month before them. Individual months range from 19 to 23 weekdays. For an exact count between two dates, including holidays, use the business days calculator.

How many hours is full time per year in a 35 or 37.5-hour week?

Multiply the weekly hours by 52 for paid hours: 1,820 for 35 hours and 1,950 for 37.5. Actually worked in 2026, after federal holidays and before vacation: 250 days times 7 hours is 1,750, and 250 times 7.5 is 1,875.

How many billable hours are in a year for a freelancer?

Fewer than any figure above. Start from the 2,000 working hours of 2026 after federal holidays, take off vacation and sick days, then take off the share of each week that goes to finding clients, admin and unpaid work. At 15 days off and 70 percent billable time that is about 1,316 billable hours, which is why an hourly rate cannot be a salary divided by 2,080.
