The headline number
Zola's 2026 First Look Report, a survey of over 11,500 couples getting married in 2026, puts the average cost of a wedding at $36,000, holding steady at that level for the second year in a row. Zola counts what couples pay out of pocket after family contributions, which is one reason surveys differ from each other: a study that counts everyone's spending, or a different set of couples, lands on a different number. Treat $36,000 as an industry average for one year from one source, not a target. Half of all weddings cost less.
Where the money goes
The Zola Wedding Cost Index, quoted in the same report, gives these national averages for the main vendors. The share column is each item's share of the seven listed, which add up to $39,827.
| Category | Average cost | Share of the seven listed |
|---|---|---|
| Venue | $8,573 | 22% |
| Catering | $6,927 | 17% |
| Flowers and décor | $6,345 | 16% |
| Bar services | $5,542 | 14% |
| Photography | $4,400 | 11% |
| Wedding planning | $4,047 | 10% |
| Videography | $3,993 | 10% |
| Seven categories together | $39,827 | 100% |
Three things stand out. The venue is the single largest line at $8,573, but food and drink together, catering plus bar at $12,469, are bigger, and both are priced per head. Photography and videography together come to $8,393, about as much as the flowers. And the seven listed vendors total $39,827, which leaves room inside the $36,000 average for the rest: attire, music, stationery, cake, transport, favours, rentals and the officiant, which the index does not break out in the report. The wedding budget calculator starts from a total and a guest count, splits it into categories you can rename and reweight, and tracks estimates against what you actually pay.
What the guest count does
The budget divided by the headcount is the number caterers and venues think in. At the $36,000 average:
| Guests | Budget per guest at $36,000 |
|---|---|
| 50 | $720 |
| 75 | $480 |
| 100 | $360 |
| 150 | $240 |
| 200 | $180 |
The table understates how much a shorter list saves, because only part of the budget scales with guests. The venue fee, the photographer, the planner and the videographer cost the same for 80 people as for 150; catering, the bar, rentals, invitations and the cake grow with every name. Cutting 150 guests to 100 removes a third of the per-head costs and none of the fixed ones. The budget calculator shows the two kinds side by side when you change the guest count.
Where you marry
Location moves the total more than any single vendor. Zola's cost index gives two ends of the range for a 150-guest wedding, and the report gives typical budget ranges by state:
| Place | Average or range |
|---|---|
| San Francisco, 150 guests | $84,649 |
| Milwaukee, 150 guests | $42,571 |
| Kansas, typical budget range | $18,100 to $27,100 |
| New York, typical budget range | $43,400 to $65,100 |
The San Francisco figure is 2.0 times the Milwaukee one for the same guest count, and the top of the New York range is 3.6 times the bottom of the Kansas range. A venue an hour outside a major city, or a date outside the peak season, is the lever that changes the total most without changing the guest list.
Saving for it
Dividing the target by a monthly amount gives the months of saving. For the $36,000 average, before any interest and before family contributions:
| Saved per month | Months to $36,000 |
|---|---|
| $1,000 | 36 |
| $1,500 | 24 |
| $2,000 | 18 |
| $3,000 | 12 |
The savings goal calculator works it the other way round, from the wedding date to the deposit needed each month, with interest on the balance. The budget planner shows where that deposit comes from in a monthly budget. Deposits to vendors are usually due long before the date, so the saving has to be front-loaded rather than spread evenly to the day.
How to use the averages
- Start from your number, not the average. Decide what you can spend, then use the category shares above as a first split and adjust for what you care about.
- Fix the guest list before the venue. It drives food, drink, rentals and the size of venue you need.
- Get three quotes per vendor in your area; the national average tells you little about one city.
- Keep a buffer of around a tenth of the budget for the costs that appear late: alterations, tips, overtime, extra guests.
- Track estimates, actuals and paid in one place, so deposits already paid are not spent twice on paper.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average cost of a wedding?
Zola's 2026 First Look Report, a survey of over 11,500 couples getting married in 2026, puts the average at $36,000, holding steady for the second year in a row. Zola measures what couples pay out of pocket after family contributions. Averages hide a wide spread: the same report's cost index shows a 150-guest wedding averaging $84,649 in San Francisco and $42,571 in Milwaukee.
What is the most expensive part of a wedding?
The venue, at an average of $8,573 in the Zola Wedding Cost Index, followed by catering at $6,927 and flowers and décor at $6,345. Catering and bar services together, $12,469, are the largest block, and both scale directly with the guest list.
How much does a wedding cost per guest?
Divide the budget by the headcount. At the $36,000 average, 100 guests work out to $360 each and 150 guests to $240 each, but the per-guest figure falls as the list grows because the venue, photographer and planner cost the same for 80 people as for 150. The costs that really move with each guest are food, drink, rentals and invitations.
How long does it take to save for a wedding?
Divide the target by what you can put aside each month. $36,000 takes 36 months at $1,000 a month, 24 months at $1,500 and 18 months at $2,000, before any interest and before contributions from family. The savings goal calculator turns a date and a target into the monthly deposit.
Does the average include the honeymoon and the rings?
Zola's $36,000 is the average spent on the wedding by the couple after family contributions, and the category figures come from its cost index of vendor prices. Rings, the honeymoon and pre-wedding events are separate decisions; if you want them in one number, add lines for them in the wedding budget calculator so the total reflects everything you will actually pay.
