Why iPhone photos are HEIC

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC, the High Efficiency Image Container. It stores the same picture in about half the space of a JPG, which is why your phone fits so many photos. The catch: Windows, many websites, online forms and older programs still expect JPG. If a portal rejects your photo or Windows shows an empty icon, the HEIC format is usually the reason.

  • JPG: opens on every device and in every program. The right choice for sharing, uploading and printing.
  • PNG: lossless, but much larger. Choose it only when you want to edit the image without any further quality loss.

Stop your iPhone from taking HEIC photos

If you always need JPG, change the camera setting: open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG from then on. Photos you already took stay HEIC, and this converter turns them into JPG in batches.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. 1Drop your HEIC photos on the box, or tap it on your phone to pick photos from your library.
  2. 2Keep JPG and a quality of 90, or choose PNG. Each photo converts right away.
  3. 3Save single photos, or press Download all to get every JPG in one ZIP file.

Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and iPads save by default. It keeps the same quality as JPG at about half the file size, but many Windows programs, websites and older devices cannot open it. Converting to JPG, also called JPEG, makes the photo work everywhere.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. Safari can open HEIC itself; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox a decoder of about 3 MB is loaded once and then works on your device. Your photos never leave your computer or phone.

Can I convert many photos at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many HEIC files as you like, for example a whole folder from your iPhone. Each photo is converted one after another, and Download all saves them together in one ZIP file.

Which quality should I choose?

90 is a good default: the JPG looks the same as the original and is usually about twice the size of the HEIC file. Choose 80 for smaller files to email or upload, or 100 when you want to edit the photo further.

Is the location and camera data kept?

No. The converted JPG contains only the image, without EXIF data such as GPS location, date or camera model. That is good for privacy when you share photos, but keep the original if you need the date for a photo library.
