PDF to Word

Turn a PDF into a Word document you can edit. The text comes over with its paragraphs, headings and lists, and the file never leaves your device.

What this PDF to Word converter does

A PDF stores where each letter sits on the page, not which words form a paragraph or a heading. To get an editable Word file, the converter reads every piece of text with its position, size and font, then rebuilds the structure: lines that follow each other with normal spacing become one paragraph, larger text becomes a heading, lines that start with a bullet or a number become a list, and words split with a hyphen at the end of a line are joined again. The result is a .docx with real Word styles, ready to edit.

All of it happens in your browser with pdf.js, the PDF engine of Firefox. Unlike most online converters, there is no upload, no queue and no file size limit beyond what your device can handle.

What comes over, and what does not

  • Comes over: all text, paragraphs, headings in three levels, bold and italic words, bullet lists, numbered lists with their original numbers, page breaks.
  • Not rebuilt: columns, tables, images, text boxes, colors, fonts and exact positions. Tables turn into lines of text you can paste into a Word table.
  • Needs OCR first: scanned PDFs and photos of documents, because their pages are images without any text.

So it is the right tool for letters, reports, articles, contracts and CVs you want to rework, and the wrong one for a brochure whose layout must stay exactly as it is. To only reuse the text, the Copy text button gives it to you as plain text. If you need just a few pages, cut them out first with Split PDF; to keep the look of a page as a picture, use PDF to JPG.

The options

Detect headings compares the size of each paragraph with the body text: much larger text becomes Heading 1, larger Heading 2, slightly larger or short bold lines Heading 3. Switch it off for documents with a lot of large text that is not a heading. New page per PDF page adds a page break wherever a PDF page ends; switch it off to get one flowing text. Remove page numbers and running headers drops lines that repeat at the top or bottom of most pages, like a document title or "Page 3 of 12".

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the PDF and writes the Word file on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so contracts, CVs and payslips stay private. The page keeps working even if you go offline after it has loaded.

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

No, and no converter manages that perfectly. This one brings over the text with paragraphs, headings, bold and italic words, bullet and numbered lists and page breaks, in clean Word styles you can edit. Columns, tables, images, text boxes and exact positions are not rebuilt: tables arrive as lines of text and images are left out.

Why is my Word file empty?

The PDF is probably a scan: each page is a picture of text, not text. Such files need OCR (optical character recognition) first. The tool tells you when a PDF has almost no text. Try an OCR tool, or the "Save as text" option of a scanner app, and convert the result.

Can I convert a password protected PDF?

Not with the password still on. Open the PDF in a viewer with the password, save or print it as a new PDF without protection, and convert that copy. PDFs that only block editing but open without a password usually work.

Which programs open the .docx file?

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and most other word processors. The headings use the built-in Heading 1, 2 and 3 styles, so a table of contents and the navigation pane work right away.
