MP4 to MP3 Converter

Turn the sound of a video into an MP3 file you can play anywhere: a song, a lecture, an interview or a voice message. The conversion runs on your device.

Convert a video to MP3

MP3 bitrate
Good for music. About 1.4 MB per minute.
Channels
Mono is enough for speech. It is written at half the bitrate, so the file is half as big.

Your video is converted by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded.

From video to MP3 without an upload

Most online MP4 to MP3 converters make you upload the whole video, wait, and download the result again. Here the work happens in your browser tab: the sound track is decoded on your device and encoded with LAME, the same MP3 encoder many desktop apps use. A 500 MB phone video is converted without sending a single byte anywhere.

  • Music from your own clips: keep the song from a concert video or a rehearsal you filmed.
  • Lectures and webinars: listen to a recorded class on the way to work without the picture.
  • Interviews: send the sound of a video call to a transcription service that wants MP3.

Bitrate, stereo or mono, and file size

MP3 uses a fixed number of bits per second, so the size depends only on the length and the bitrate. At 128 kbps a minute takes about 0.96 MB, at 192 kbps about 1.44 MB and at 320 kbps about 2.4 MB. The estimate above updates when you change the settings.

The sound inside an MP4 is usually AAC, which is already compressed. Turning it into MP3 compresses it a second time, so choose a bitrate at least as high as you need: 128 kbps for speech, 192 or 256 kbps for music. Mono mixes both channels into one, which suits voice recordings and saves space.

If you need lossless audio for editing instead, the extract audio from video tool saves the same sound as WAV. To cut the MP3 to a clip or a ringtone, open it in Trim Audio. Recording your own voice instead? The voice recorder can save MP3 too.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser reads the video, decodes its sound and writes the MP3 on your own device. The file never leaves your computer or phone, so there is no upload wait and nobody else gets a copy.

Which bitrate should I pick?

For talks, lectures and podcasts, 128 kbps is plenty, and Mono halves the file again. For music, take 192 kbps or more. The sound in most videos is already compressed as AAC, so a very high bitrate cannot bring back detail that is not there, but it keeps the second encoding step from adding noticeable loss.

Does it work with MOV, WebM and audio files?

Yes. Anything your browser can play works: MP4 and WebM everywhere, MOV from iPhones in Safari and usually in Chrome, and audio files such as M4A, WAV, OGG or FLAC. MKV depends on the codecs inside.

Why does it sometimes take as long as the video?

Some browsers cannot decode the sound of some files in one go, and very long videos would need too much memory for that. Then the video plays silently in the background and the sound is turned into MP3 while it plays. Keep the tab open until the bar is full.

Can I convert only part of the video?

Convert the whole file first, then open the MP3 in the audio trimmer on this site and cut the start and end. It also has fades and a volume control and can save the clip as MP3 again.
